Two Minute Drill: Turning Setbacks into Comebacks

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is, “How do I approach setbacks with comebacks?” This was a question that came to me during one of my presentations recently. We always survey at the end of my presentations to find out where I can improve and how I can deliver more value.

A Five-Step Process

One of the questions we always ask is, “What one question do you have for Dr. Jay?” and one question that came to me was, “How do I approach setbacks with comebacks?

It was a five-step process for me when I sat down and thought about it.

One, I try to get my mind right because many times when we’re dealing with setbacks, it can be frustrating and can even create depression or anxiety. These are the emotions that, at least I’ve had, when dealing with setbacks.

I try to get my mind right, whether that’s reading a blog post, or watching a video. I’m trying to find inspirational content that will get me out of any funk that I might be in, to get my brain working in the right direction.

Number two, I try and ideate some solutions. I’m always really focused on how we’re going to solve this problem or how I’m going to solve this problem.

Many times, specifically in business, if you’ve got an issue, it’s either a people problem, a process problem, or a knowledge problem.

I’m always trying to seek out which one of those, if not all of them, the category it falls under. Then, if it’s a knowledge problem, certainly I do more research to find out what I don’t know that I need to know to solve those setbacks and come back with a comeback.

Then third, I engage my team. I talk to my team about the setback; I try to get as many ideas as possible from them and get their feedback. They’re on the front line, so many times, they are the ones that have the solutions.

I always engage my team with the challenge, the setback, as well as the solutions.

Fourth, testing some of those solutions. You can take little bets along the way and see if some of those little bets move you in the right direction.

Then lastly, self-reflection: what can I be doing better to not have these setbacks to begin with? I know setbacks are a normal part of life and they are a normal part of running a business, but there’s always got to be, for me at least, some self-reflection as well.

So that’s how I approach setbacks with comebacks. I hope that was helpful for you guys today. I’m in Lake Las Vegas, and this is my last stop on a four-city, eight-day tour. This is my last speaking event of the year.

It’s been an amazing year, thanks so much for coming along with me on all my little travel adventures.

You guys have a great week, and I’ll talk to you next week.
