What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is feedback. I was talking with a colleague about how they could give someone on their team feedback and find ways to inspire them to be the best version of themselves. 

The Right Way to Provide Feedback

 

I thought about some rules that I typically follow when it comes to providing feedback. 

The first rule of thumb is that I always ask a lot of questions. Some of you have heard this before, but I’ll ask questions like, “Help me understand why this happened. What do you think the impact is of this behavior or outcome, and what would you do moving forward to ensure this never happens again?” Asking questions is important. 

The second rule of thumb is to set the context for the feedback, and I’m not talking about a compliment sandwich. No! What I’m talking about is helping the person who’s going to receive the feedback understand the why. As leaders, I believe that our fundamental primary responsibility is to be a great coach. 

If you set the context for that individual, like “I’m going to give you some feedback, and I’m doing it to ensure that I can help you be the best version of yourself,” that’s a much different approach than saying, “You suck. You did this wrong. This is what needs to be fixed. Fix it as soon as possible.” So, set the context. 

Lastly, I think an important rule of thumb is that anyone should be able to give anyone else feedback if the feedback is accurate, honest, and direct. So, it doesn’t matter if you’re a clinic director, CA, manager, or a frontline team member. 

Like any person should be able to give and receive feedback; feedback is not hierarchical. So, anyway guys, that’s this week’s Two Minute Drill. Be authentically curious, make sure that you set the context, and allow people on the team to provide feedback, just like we expect leaders to do.

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is feedback. I reconnected with a longtime friend of mine last week, went to dinner and we had a great time. We’ll just call him Dr. Jerry. Dr. Jerry and I were hanging out, catching up on stuff and he commented on my videos saying, “I watch your videos, they’re great.”  

Seeking Feedback

 

He was scrolling through his phone. “They’re really good.” And I asked, “What could make them better?” He turned to me, looked at me dead in the eye, and said, “BOOBS!” 

“Jerry, really?” I responded. 

“Yeah, BOOBS would make it better,” he said. I pressed for a real answer. “What could genuinely make it better?” 

He pondered a bit. “I don’t know. They’re good – short, to the point. You tell good stories and have meaningful messages.” 

“Alright, but what else can improve them?” I asked. 

“I’ll have to think about that,” he replied, “But boobs would be good.” And those of you who know Jerry understand this is typical of him. 

So, here’s my take-home point.  

First, when you ask for feedback, you never know what you’re going to get. Sometimes the feedback might surprise you or not be as positive as you’d hope, even when you’re seeking critical input. Just be open.  

When people only give you positive feedback and you want to know how to improve, dig a little deeper. Ask another question or two to see if they can come up with something that can enhance what you’re doing. 

Lastly, if you are being asked to provide feedback, think about the question carefully. The person asking is looking to improve. Use your brain and work a little harder cognitively to offer constructive feedback that can help them grow.

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is Feedback. I’m coming to you from the Washington Reagan Airport. I’m about to fly to Denver to hang out with Cat. Cat is our Director of Integrated Operations. I’m looking forward to having an all-day strategy session with her, providing feedback, and also receiving some in return.

 

 

Giving Feedback

 

Feedback is a crucial responsibility that we have as leaders.

Today, I gave feedback to an individual on my team. It didn’t go very well, and I drew three lessons from that experience.

First, when you see body language that doesn’t align with where you want the conversation to go, address it. Just say, “Hey, it seems like maybe you’re not agreeing with or responding well to the feedback I’m giving you. Tell me more.”

Sometimes, you have to agree to disagree. You can offer feedback, but if someone isn’t receptive, there’s only so much you can do.

Lastly, don’t let a negative response or someone’s resistance to feedback deter you from offering it again in the future. It can be challenging to engage in these conversations, but we, as leaders, must persevere. Continue to provide feedback, receive it, and find ways to improve.

At the end of the day, if someone’s not open to feedback, it doesn’t mean you should refrain from giving it to them or anyone else. Feedback is essential for achieving goals, reaching objectives, and ensuring the entire team succeeds.

What’s up Kaizenovators, happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is feedback. Yesterday, I was in my accountability group call. Great friends, great people, and smart minds, and I received some feedback about some of the content that I’ve been creating online recently. My buddy was like, “Basically, what the fuck are you doing?”

The Power of Feedback

It didn’t make any sense to him. He was confused by the content that I was creating. Quite honestly, I agreed with him, and it’s an area that I know that I’m just not strong in. Some of this new content that I’ve been creating over the last several months was a little bit painful for me to hear.

Of course, I understood where it was coming from. It was coming from a great place, from a great heart, from a great soul, but it was still hard to hear nonetheless. I had to remind myself that the feedback that we get is constructive, sometimes even painful to hear, does not define us, and it doesn’t tell us who we are. It gives us feedback, it gives us information, and it gives us data so that we can make improvements.

As I create more of this content online, not the TMDs, but this other content that I’m creating through these other videos, I have to get beyond the feelings that I have about inadequacy and not feeling good about myself and how I’m creating these videos. I need to use this feedback in a way that actually inspires me to do even better. To think really hard about what I am trying to accomplish. What value am I really trying to create so that I can deliver a better product?

So, when we get feedback that is sometimes difficult to hear or hurts our soul, um, it’s okay.

Just remember, it doesn’t define us, and we can use it to fuel us, and inspire us to be even better as we move forward. That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill. Talk to you guys next week.
