Two Minute Drill: The Positive Impact of Connection

What’s up Kaizenovators, happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Last week I had the very good fortune of being able to go out to dinner with one of my friends and our clinic director of 21 years, Dr. Allen Huffman. This dinner inspired today’s topic of conversation about connection.

Connect With Your Team

I’ve mentioned Dr. Allen Huffman in my previous TMDs, about his work ethic and the level of ownership that he takes in taking care of patients, taking care of the team, and supporting what we do at Kaizo Health.

It was great, I didn’t really want to talk about work. Then I was asking a few questions and he started sharing some great stories about his time in the military. He shared stories about the positive impact that he was creating on the soldiers that he was there to care for and treat. Babies he delivered, which was just incredible. Travels and experiences that he had.

I started to get this overwhelming feeling of disappointment in myself that I didn’t know more about him, didn’t know more about his life, and his previous life before he came to Kaizo Health until that moment.

So, I told him “Man, I feel bad. I should have known more about you all the years that we’ve spent together.”

We enjoyed our time together. But I just got to thinking more and more about this. I am very blessed and very fortunate. I have great relationships and I’m close with many of my direct reports. A lot of that is because I spend so much time with them.

The message today is really doing what you can to spend some time with the people in your organization and connect with them, ask them questions about their lives in order to get to know them a little bit better.

When you do, what you will find is that you strengthen the connection and you ultimately strengthen the level of engagement that you have with them, that they have with you, and collectively that you have for your practices and your lives.

So, find ways to connect with your team, spend some time, which is the greatest gift that you can give them, learn more about them, share more about yourself, and be vulnerable.

I think what you’ll find is that connection will have a very positive impact on your life, their life, and the lives that you’re there to serve.

That’s this week’s two-minute drill. Thank you for spending this time with me and I’ll talk to you all next week.

Your questions and feedback are always welcome and appreciated!
